Through the arts, we want to share about the freedom of Christ's love, tell the redemption story, stir hearts to our Creator, and engage others in worship.
STARZ, Turning Pointe’s Theater Company, is designed to offer foundational theatrical training, dance technique, and vocal training in a safe environment. Kids will learn fine arts skills, build relationships, and learn the ins and outs of stage productions. Our desire is to honor God in all we do and serve Him with the talents He has entrusted to us. We practice this thru shared devotions and outreach opportunities. Students will grow as both artists and God’s workmanship as we study, fellowship and worship through our craft. We desire to be a light in the darkness, stars in this fallen world, who use the arts to direct others toward the love of Christ!
"Our goal is to lay a firm foundation of skills and excellence in acting, singing, dancing, and production wrapped in an environment which emphasizes the role of our faith in the world of the Arts and brings students/families together for a unique season of "building community." We want each student to leave STARZ with tools for life and with the confidence to be a voice...no matter their arena of influence. This is who we are...this is what we bring to the world of the Arts in our community!"
Mrs. Swank - Producer
STARZ is a division of Turning Pointe School of Dance
STARZ Theater Company is a division of Turning Pointe School of Dance in Colorado Springs, CO. STARZ Theater Company and Turning Pointe School of Dance are Christian based programs that provide a 6-month intensive opportunity to grow in theatrical and production skills, produce a ticketed event open to our community, participate in acts of service to one another and our community and create a unique season of community. Under the STARZ Theater Company (STC) umbrella is STARZ Rizing and STARZ.
STARZ Rizing is the entry point for STARZ Theater Company. It is specifically designed for students needing additional experience and training in voice, acting and dance. This is for students of all ages as our goal is additional experience and exposure to the theater process. Please see the STARZ Rizing tab for more information.
STARZ is show based training and driven almost entirely by the demands of the Winter Showcase Performance. Experience in voice, acting and dance are crucial. These perspectives will be utilized in final decisions for placement within our Company.
STARZ Theater Company is comprised of three tiers. Students may be placed in those tiers by the Directorial Team through the audition process. We developed these tiers in order to allow students to build their foundation from the ground up and grow in technique and confidence before taking on the demands of a full-length show. It is exceedingly rare that a first year auditionee will be placed in Tier 3 without extensive training or performance experience. We hope students will accept any placement offered with trust that we, as Directors, want to see our STC students thrive!
Students auditioning for Starz Theater Company may receive placement in one of the following tiers:
Tier 1: Turning Pointe (TP) Theater Classes which include: Showtime Acting, Improv, Musical Theater, Group Vocal and/or Ballet for Musical Theater. Placement in Tier 1, does not guarantee class space within Turning Pointe classes. Please visit the Turning Pointe website for more information www.turningpointeschoolofdance.com. There is no replacement for building and integrating the fundamentals taught in these classes in preparation for additional opportunities in the future.
Tier 2: STARZ Rizing with a strong recommendation to add Turning Pointe Musical Theater Class, Group Vocal, Showtime Acting, and/or dance classes to increase training and future opportunities. Students in Tier 2 may also be offered the opportunity to join our Stage Crew for the performance.
Tier 3: STARZ with a strong recommendation to add Turning Pointe Musical Theater Class, Group Vocal, Showtime Acting, and/or dance classes to increase training and future opportunities.

Audition Requirements and Format:
Students are asked to please prepare a 1-minute song from a Broadway Musical or Disney Musical. Please no other genre of song and be prepared to perform acapella only. If a student is unfamiliar with a song choice from our required genre, we recommend Do-Re-Mi from "The Sound of Music." Students will be asked to stop singing at the 1-minute mark, so please prepare a song within that time limit. Please keep song selections family friendly with no language.
There will be a tap dance audition video that will be uploaded to the website one week prior to the audition date. Only Students with tap training/experience should learn the audition piece from the video. The tap audition dance will not be taught during the audition, only demonstrated twice to the Director's panel for students with tap experience. These students with tap training/experience ONLY will perform the prepared piece.
A group jazz dance audition will be learned by ALL auditionees regardless of dance experience. This jazz-style dance audition will be taught during the audition (no video) and demonstrated twice to the Director's panel by the students.
There will be no monologue audition this year.
Students should be prepared to audition both their vocal selection and their group dance in a group of 10 students.
Auditions will be closed to all except the Directorial Panel and the auditionees.
Declination of Offered Role Notice: Students who decline a placement in Tier 2 or 3 after completing the audition process and receiving a placement offer email, or those who drop out of a show mid-year, will be ineligible to audition for the following STC Production for 1 year. The exception to this rule will be extenuating family or personal circumstances which will be considered and reviewed by the Directorial committee.
Exception: Students are given the opportunity on their audition form to state if they are only willing/able to accept a certain Tier or Role. Students who answer that question truthfully prior to completing the audition process and receiving a placement offer email will be eligible to audition for STC the following year even if they are not offered their desired role/tier for the current show.
We encourage students to remain open as they consider a desired placement. Placement in any of our STC Tiers is an opportunity for growth, training, community and fun. Each Tier is equally valued and students who commit to progressing through each Tier gain tremendous skills through that process.
No member of the STC Directorial and Leadership Team can participate in the process of helping prepare students for STC auditions via private lessons. Parents and students who are unsure of audition readiness are encouraged to seek out professional input for their students as they prepare for auditions.
No Member of the Directorial or Leadership Team will field inquiries prior to, during, or post auditions, about auditions, or the "why's" of decisions made. Once the Cast List is posted, it is final. The Directorial and Leadership Team of STC asks that each family and student respectfully consider their offer and simply accept, or decline, the opportunity. Phone calls, attempt at meetings, emails, or any other communication in this regard will be met with no response. We are grateful for your respect of the incredibly thoughtful and prayerful process that goes into the placement of each and every student.
General STARZ Requirements:
New Age and Experience Requirements: 3rd grade thru high school students may audition for STARZ Theater Company. Involvement in previous STC productions is not a guarantee of cast placement in future productions. For STARZ (Tier 3) placement, the Directorial team primarily considers students with at least one year of Musical Theater training (MT Level 1 or higher) and/or one year of a full production performance experience. Exceptions are considered on an individual basis.
A full-length show requires a different level of commitment from all of our performers. This must be taken into consideration by the student and parents before auditioning.
Previous participation in STARZ or STARZ Rizing is not a guarantee of placement in STARZ. Roles in the Winter Showcase are limited. A formal offer will be emailed the week following auditions. An emailed acceptance of offer, a signed Parent/Student Contract, a commitment to the STC Kick Off day and the following Intensive Week (in addition to weekly rehearsals which begin September 6th/7th) are required to accept a placement within STARZ. In addition, tuition for the season or the initial payment to initiate a monthly payment plan will be due upon acceptance/registration.
Leads and support roles will be offered to those that have determined that "STARZ" is their primary commitment from August - January. If you have a prior commitment to another show/performance, marching band, fall and/or winter sports, or similar activities that conflict with rehearsals, please note on your audition application. Those who have additional commitments but want to audition for the mainstage production will be considered for ensemble roles only.
The roles of Company Swing, Understudy and Dance Captain will be a permanent addition to each year's cast list. This will require a commitment level equal to that of our leads and supports.
At least one parent is required to be a part of Parent Orientation at the beginning of Kick Off Day, August 24, 2019.
Parents/families of STARZ students are asked to prayerfully consider where they can give time and talent during the season, during Show Month, and/or during Show Week. For more information on our volunteer teams, please go to Our Team tab.
Rehearsal requirements: dance/movement appropriate attire, water bottle, pencil, highlighter, notebook and a "can do" attitude that seeks to contribute to the STARZ Theater Company team through attitude and actions.
Absences must be communicated in advance, if at all possible. Commitments and/or absences known prior to auditions should be indicated on the Audition Application.
Each Starz student is required to participate in at least one outreach and at least two promos. These will be communicated as dates are confirmed and usually take place in November, December and January. Some promos are at schools and during school hours.
Each student and at least one parent are required to sign off on the Parent/Student Contract that will be included with the Casting Offer Email sent the week after auditions.
Students are encouraged to take additional dance classes offered by Turning Pointe Dance to strengthen that piece of our production, as well as acting and group vocal classes.

STARZ Theater Company is moving to a Season Tuition Commitment.
Starz - $500 + one-time production fee of $100 (which includes a "Newsie" show shirt - this is different from the STC black company shirt)
There are two options for payment:
Pay the full season up front and receive a 5% discount. This is due by August 25th.
Set up monthly payments. First payment will be due upon registration prior to August 25th. The second payment will be due September 1st and on the first of each consecutive month.
Production fees are not due until Show Month.
Our Program Ad Sales do offer the opportunity to offset production fees entirely. More information about this will be available during Kick Off Parent Orientation and during the season.
Please note that student withdrawals after October 10th will mean that student's family WILL be responsible for all tuition through the end of the season (end of January). Early in the season, budgets are set and purchases are being made based on student participation. Therefore, a commitment for the season is crucial to the financial success of the production.
